Its coloration is unique that it was actually named after its appearance, since its name translates to “blue stone".

In the Renaissance period, Lapis Lazuli crystal stone was often ground and used to create blue paint. In powdered form, the stone was also used in blue eyeshadows in Ancient Egypt.
